JEFFERSON — The Jefferson Historical Society’s final open house of the season is set for 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Old Jefferson Town House at 7 Gardiner Road.
Oxen were essential for many farmers and workers throughout Jefferson’s history, and several people continue the tradition, showing their animals and how they work. Three ox yokes on the first floor highlight this long history, according to a news release from Paula Roberts with the society.
Photos of Henry Cunningham, a longtime cattleman, and Roy Cunningham, an early 1900s farmer who made numerous ox yokes for many years, will be on display. The display also includes a vintage very large yoke by an unknown craftsman which was used for many years.
Other exhibits include photos of some of the art palettes painted during the 2007 Jefferson Bicentennial celebration; many items from the Richard and Gladys Johnston family; early beachwear; and many albums of school, family and home photographs; and the 1976 Jefferson Quilt.
Jefferson memorabilia, 2025 vintage photos calendar and parts of vintage ox yokes will be for sale.
