Re: “MainePERS still wrongly financing climate chaos,” Aug. 28.
Dr. Richard Thomas seems somewhat hyperbolic in stating that the “best science shows that we remain on track to make the world uninhabitable.”
A leading authority and driver of climate concern is the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change. They project a substantial decrease in global economic growth with increasing global temperatures but there still will be growth and presumably life on Earth.
Moving too quickly away from fossil fuels and increasing the cost of energy suppresses economic growth as well. There also are terrible environmental impacts. Solar and wind need hundreds of times more area that gas fired or nuclear electricity production. Maine may not want MainePERS to invest in companies that produce fossil fuels but its citizens still need them.
