The arrest of Lisa Barney, shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, came after a yearlong investigation into the death of the child, who was not identified.

In a brief news release issued by the Maine Department of Public Safety Friday, Lt. Aaron Turcotte said the incident occurred in Oakland on Aug. 31, 2023. Eight days later, an autopsy was conducted on the child by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. The child’s death was ruled a homicide, but the manner of death was not released.

Barney, of Oakland, was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury and charged with manslaughter Thursday, and she was arrested by detectives from the Maine State Police’s major crimes central unit.

Barney’s initial appearance in court took place Friday at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta.

She is being held at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility on $100,000 bail.
