NORWAY — The Little Free Food Pantry is set to move from Longley Square to its new home at Alan Day Community Garden, 26 Whitman St.
The pantry will be accessible during daylight hours on a self-serve basis starting Tuesday, Oct. 1. The move is part of a broader effort to improve access to fresh, regionally grown foods, with the addition of a refrigerated space for vegetables and ready to eat foods. While the garden’s gate in the driveway will remain closed at times to keep deer out, it is not a barrier for people, and all are welcome during daylight.
Fare Share Food Cooperative will regularly stock and manage the pantry, providing regular additions, and ADCG will include seasonal fresh vegetables from the garden. The cooperative has also expanded its in-store services with a discount grocery area, offering a wide selection of discounted items. SNAP customers can access Farm Fresh Rewards to have a 50% discount on all fruits and vegetables. Farm Fresh Rewards is a program managed through Good Shepherd Food Bank.
In addition to the Little Free Food Pantry, Alan Day Community Garden will continue to offer free SNAP Ed cooking classes and youth cooking programs to provide ways to make meals on a budget and access other food resources.
To financially support the Little Free Food Pantry, ADCG is using its commercial kitchen to prepare ready-to-eat foods such as soups, salads and wraps that are now for sale at Fare Share. Following a pay-it-forward model, profits from these food sales will support ADCG’s food access programs, ensuring that the community benefits from every purchase.
