Police in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, arrested a Bangor man who local authorities believe killed his ex-girlfriend in Bangor earlier this week.

Bangor Police Sergeant Jason McAmbley told reporters that the department issued an arrest warrant for Keith Thorpe, 42, after finding the body of 39-year-old Virginia Cookson in a local residence. A coworker had called Bangor police after Cookson did not show up for work Wednesday, the department said.

Bangor police have not stated a precise cause of death.

Police in Pittsfield found Thorpe after receiving calls early Friday morning for a single-vehicle crash and, later, a stolen vehicle, that department said in an afternoon release.

“They didn’t know who he was at the time, or why he was there,” McAmbley told reporters at a Friday news conference. “Neither the victim nor the suspect have ties to that area.”

Pittsfield police spotted the stolen vehicle before pursuing it through town early Friday morning, the department said in an afternoon release. They identified the driver as Thorpe after he was stopped.

Pittsfield police charged Thorpe with “numerous motor vehicle offenses,” the department said in the release. He also faces an outstanding warrant on a murder charge in Maine.

McAmbley said Thorpe had waived extradition and “we expect to have him back in Bangor by tomorrow.” McAmbley said Thorpe has a criminal background, including at least one felony, but limited involvement with the Bangor department.

Bangor police plan to charge Thorpe with depraved indifference murder, he said.

McAmbley said police had also visited the residence where Cookson was found last week but declined to share details about that visit.
