Dartmouth College announced a new center named for its winningest football coach Tuesday on what would have been his 68th birthday.

Buddy Teevens, known nationally for his efforts to make football safer, died in September 2023 of injuries he had sustained in a bicycle accident six months earlier. Teevens coached at the University of Maine in 1985 and ’86.

The center will focus on research with cognitive science, quantitative social sciences, engineering and biomechanics, among the possible areas of emphasis, the college said in a news release.

It’s one of several initiatives in memory of Teevens since a community celebration honored him in May and announced that the stadium will be named the “Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field” on Saturday.

Dartmouth is setting up a fund to support leadership development, nutrition and mental wellness and performance for students. It is also establishing a scholarship fund to honor Buddy and his wife, Kirsten Teevens, for the culture of inclusivity they fostered. Gifts to the football program will enhance the team’s recruiting efforts and support technology upgrades.

• Florida State is making a quarterback change, with Coach Mike Norvell ruling out struggling starter DJ Uiagalelei for Saturday’s game against No. 15 Clemson because of a finger injury.

Uiagalelei could be sidelined even longer, too.

“We still got some further testing to see what the longevity of that is going to keep him out,” Norvell said. “But it’s most likely going to be the next couple weeks.”

The Seminoles (1-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) have a bye week after facing the Tigers (3-1, 2-0) before playing at Duke on Oct. 18.

Redshirt freshman Brock Glenn will start against Clemson, his third start in two seasons. Glenn got the nod in last year’s ACC championship game in the Orange Bowl in place of star Jordan Travis.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Sydney Affolter, who played a key role in Iowa’s run to a second straight national championship game last season, underwent knee surgery and will be out until early November, Coach Jan Jensen said

Affolter started the final nine games in place of the injured Molly Davis. She had a combined 20 points and 11 rebounds in Final Four games against UConn and South Carolina and averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds for the season.

HOCKEY

NHL: Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine is expected to miss two to three months with a sprained left knee that won’t require surgery.

The Canadiens announced the injury update after Laine exited early in Saturday’s 2-1 preseason loss to Toronto following a knee-on-knee collision with Maple Leafs forward Cédric Paré.

The Canadiens also announced that rookie defenseman David Reinbacher is out five to six months after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Karim Adeyemi starred as Borussia Dortmund ran riot against Celtic and Barcelona and Manchester City claimed their first wins in the restructured league.

Adeyemi scored a first-half hat trick as Dortmund routed Celtic 7-1 at home.

Robert Lewandowski got Barcelona off the mark as the Spanish giant eased to a 5-0 home win over Swiss team Young Boys, while his former teammate İlkay Gündoğan got City off to a 4-0 win at Slovan Bratislava. Erling Haaland scored his 42nd goal in his 41st Champions League game.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal outclassed his former team Paris Saint-Germain in a 2-0 win with Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka scoring in the first half for the Gunners.

Inter Milan defeated Red Star Belgrade 4-0 and Bayer Leverkusen defeated AC Milan 1-0 in Germany.

Daniel Bragança scored late to earn Sporting Lisbon a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven.

Stade Brest routed Salzburg 4-0 away for its second win in as many games in Europe’s premier competition.

Senegalese forward Abdallah Sima netted twice to take his tally to three goals in two games after he scored in Brest’s tournament-opening 2-1 win over Austrian champion Sturm Graz.

Kaan Kairinen’s brilliant free kick was enough for Prague to draw 1-1 at Stuttgart.

TENNIS

CHINA OPEN: Top-ranked Jannik Sinner will play rival Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Beijing after a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over home favorite Bu Yunchaokete.

Sinner and Alcaraz accounted for all four Grand Slam titles this year. Alcaraz leads the head-to-head series 5-4 — including wins at both their meetings this year.

Third-ranked Alcaraz’s athleticism was again on show as he advanced to Wednesday’s final with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev.
“I felt great on the court once again, so I’m really happy about it,” Alcaraz said. “I couldn’t ask for a better semifinal.”

Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals when Naomi Osaka retired at 3-6, 6-4 because of a lower back injury.

She will next meet No. 115-ranked Yuliia Starodubtseva, who earlier upset No. 14 Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 6-0.
