HOCKEY

The Worcester Railers scored twice in the first period and beat the Maine Mariners, 4-0, in an ECHL game on Sunday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Justin Gill and Matthew Kopperud scored in the first for the Railers. Riley Piercey added a second-period goal and Mason Klee scored in the third.

Brad Arvanitis stopped 27 shots for Maine, while Henrik Tikkanen made 31 saves for Worcester.

The Mainers, who have lost three straight, host the Reading Royals for a two-game series that kicks of at 6 p.m. Saturday.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lara Kirby and Gillian Rover scored in the second half as the University of Maine rallied to earn a 2-2 with the New Jersey Institute of Technology in an America East game in Orono.

The Black Bears are 8-0-1 over their last nine games and have a 10-1-3 record (6-0-1 in America East) with one game remaining in the regular season. NJIT falls to 3-10-3, 0-5-2.

The Highlanders took a 2-0 lead on a first-half goal by Bella Ramirez and a second-half goal by Ciara Adams.

FOOTBALL: Miami edged ahead of Texas and climbed to No. 5 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll, its highest ranking since 2017, and Notre Dame, BYU and Texas A&M all moved into the top 10.

Oregon, Georgia, Penn State and Ohio State remained the top four teams, and Washington State and Colorado entered the Top 25 for the first time this season.

Led by Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Ward, Miami improved to 8-0 with its win over Florida State on Saturday. The Hurricanes have been in the top 10 eight straight polls but not this high since they spent two weeks at No. 2 in November 2017.

Texas, which had dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 after its home loss to Georgia, slipped another spot to No. 6 following a three-point win at Vanderbilt.

Notre Dame, knocked out of the top 10 after its Week 2 loss to Northern Illinois, moved up four spots and is No. 8 following its 51-14 win over Navy.

No. 9 BYU went on the road and beat UCF to go 8-0 and has its highest ranking since 2020, when the Cougars opened with nine straight wins.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Duke will play Arizona and Indiana will face Kansas in a doubleheader of traditional college basketball powers in the Hall of Fame Series on Nov. 12, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium.

The 2028 Final Four also will be at Allegiant.

This series began last year and typically is played in arenas throughout the country, including Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Games this year will be played in Las Vegas on Nov. 4, Phoenix on Nov. 14, Baltimore on Nov. 15 and New York on Dec 14.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: The Indiana Fever fired coach Christie Sides on Sunday, the organization announced.

Sides went 33-47 in her two seasons with the squad, including going 20-20 this season. The Fever made the playoffs as the sixth seed and were swept in the first round by the Connecticut Sun.

Indiana is the sixth team to make a coaching change this offseason, joining Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles. All of the coaches let go had three years or less experience.

NBA: Tyrese Maxey scored 10 of Philadelphia’s 13 overtime points and finished with a season-high 45 as the 76ers beat the Indiana Pacers 118-114 in Indianapolis for their first win of the season.

Maxey dominated the second half, scoring 14 of Philadelphia’s last 18 points in the third quarter and rallying the 76ers from a 102-97 deficit in the final minute of regulation.
