BELGRADE — A shooting Sunday morning at 15 Point Road in Belgrade was the result of confrontation between a woman and her adult son, police said Monday.
Christina Bell, 58, was reportedly shot in the head at her home. Her son, Samuel Bell, 26, has been charged with elevated aggravated assault in the shooting, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The woman sustained serious injuries and was taken by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was later taken to a Boston hospital and is expected to survive, Moss said.
The Augusta Regional Communications Center received a 911 call from Samuel Bell at 11:03 a.m. Sunday, reporting he had shot his mother in the face, according to an affidavit written by Trooper Nicholas Watson of the Maine State Police.
State police, Belgrade Fire & Rescue and Delta Ambulance responded to the scene.
Samuel Bell, who police said does not live at the Point Road home, left the residence in his car and was taken into custody on Guptill Road shortly after the shooting. He had given his location to the communications center and was awaiting troopers, according to the affidavit.
Samuel Bell told the communications center his mother was trying to make him commit suicide, so he shot her, according to the affidavit.
Officials said they believe Samuel Bell shot his mother from inside his car, given an apparent bullet hole in one of his car windows and the lack of any shell casing found during a sweep of the residence.
The affidavit shows that Christina Bell’s husband, Charles Bell, 56, had arrived at the scene, according to Detective Jillian Monahan of the Maine State Police. Charles Bell told police that Christina Bell was expecting their son to pay the couple $300 that he owed them.
In an interview with officials Sunday, Samuel Bell said he left work in Oakland abruptly at 10 a.m. Sunday, saying he had “quit,” and returned to his apartment to retrieve a gun.
Samuel Bell said he notified his mother he would be coming with the $300, and drove to her house with the intention of shooting her, officials said.
Samuel Bell said he backed his car into the driveway, and when Christina Bell approached the driver’s side window, he shot her once in the head, according to the affidavit. He then left the residence, and told police he had shot his mother and she needed medical attention.
Officials said Samuel Bell was denied bail and prohibited from contacting his mother or father.
