FARMINGTON — Nolan Leso scored 24 points to lead Mt. Blue past Lawrence 68-50 in boys basketball action Friday.

Leso made nine field goals and went 6 of 7 at the free-throw line, while Tyler Abell drained four 3-pointers and was 6 for 6 on foul shots for 18 points. Tucker Fitch added nine points for Mt. Blue (1-0).

Cole Quirion hit four 3s and finished with 14 points, while Brayden Davidson scored 10 and Brady Richardson had nine for Lawrence (0-1).

FOREST HILLS 73, VINALHAVEN 31: The Tigers took a 49-16 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to a season-opening win in Jackman.

Jaxon Desjardins scored 35 points for Forest Hills (1-0) and Blaine Nadeau added 10.

Vinalhaven (0-1) was led by Hunter Hamilton with 14 points.

OAK HILL 49, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 44: Braden Dubuc, Eli Desmond and Braden New led a balanced scoring attack as the Raiders (1-0) opened the season with a home win over the Falcons (0-1) in Wales.

Dubuc, Desmond and New each scored nine points for Oak Hill, while Isaac Graham added eight points.

Ben DeSalle put up a game-high 20 points and Dylan Theriault scored 14 for Mountain Valley.

MARANACOOK 55, MONMOUTH ACADEMY 43: Jack Fontaine scored 24 points to lead the Black Bears (1-0) to a win over the Mustangs (0-1) in Monmouth.

Elijah Freeman added 17 points for Maranacook.

Bingham Abbott led Monmouth Academy with 20 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

FOREST HILLS 38, VINALHAVEN 20: Allie Dunning and Morgan Petrucci each scored nine points to lead the Tigers to the season-opening win in Jackman.

Kelsey Rancourt added eight points for Forest Hills (1-0).

Lydia Wentworth scored a game-high 11 points for Vinalhaven (0-1).

FOOTBALL

AWARD: Portland High junior Cordell Jones was named Friday as Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year.

Jones was listed as a wide receiver on offense but was used in various positions, including as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation. He rushed for 971 yards and 16 touchdowns and caught 26 passes for 533 yards and eight touchdowns while helping the Bulldogs win the Class A state championship.

As a defensive back, Jones had 29 solo tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
