AUGUSTA — A fire at a North Street home Tuesday morning forced the closure of the street, which is the only way in and out of the city’s public works facility, on the heels of an overnight snowstorm.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters using a water cannon and was contained to the basement. The fire appears to have started in the electrical panel of the 15 North St. home.

Firefighters were at the fire scene for about an hour and a half. The narrow street was closed while fire trucks were parked around the home to put out the fire.

North Street is the only access to the city’s John Charest Public Works Facility, where its plow trucks are based and where they load up with sand and salt for winter road maintenance. Trucks were out in force overnight Monday into Tuesday during the snowstorm. But by the time of the fire, around 9 a.m., the city’s plow trucks had completed their round of snow removal and were already back at the public works garage before the road closure. So snow removal efforts were largely not impacted by the closure.

Haley Gauvin, director of communications and marketing for the city, said the only impact the road closure had on public works was people were unable to get into the public works site. She said residents looking to recycle, at the single-stream recycling container at the site, were advised to take their recycling to Hatch Hill landfill, where there is another recycling container.

“All the trucks were back in, so while it was inconvenient for residents, on our part it wasn’t that impactful,” Gauvin said of the fire-related road closure.

Firefighter David Wilder said the initial call reported black smoke in the basement. Firefighters responded and found heavy black smoke in the basement of the home, and a small fire in the electrical panel at the base of the stairs.

Wilder said a newer heat pump had been installed at the home.

He said the electrical panel should be repaired before the home is reoccupied.

The building is owned by residents Alyssa and Jeremy Gath, according to city tax records. The home was built in 1856.
