BANGOR — Sophomore guard James Witham was doubled team for most of Mount Desert Island’s Class B North boys basketball quarterfinal against Winslow on Saturday night at Cross Insurance Arena.
Witham was able to heat up in the second half, scoring 12 of his 15 points, and the Trojans rallied for a 46-38 win.
MDI improves to 11-8 and advances to face the winner of Saturday’s late game between Caribou and Belfast in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Winslow ends the season 11-7.
An early lead
• The Raiders started fast, jumping out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter and Brody Willette hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to stretch the lead to seven.
• Winslow, moving the ball around the perimeter to get its guards open shots, went up 19-13 in the second on a jumper by Braden Rodrigue. Freshman Noah Harding’s basket with 30 seconds left in the half put Winslow up, 21-15.
The comeback
• The Trojans looked to attack out of the break and got back into the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Black Raiders, 19-13. Witham and Dylan Stoll both scored five points in the quarter.
• Stoll hit a 3-pointer with three minutes left in the third to pull MDI within six, then scored another basket forcing Winslow to call a time out.
• The Trojans managed to tie it at 34-34 at the end of the third and pulled away in the fourth thanks to seven points by Witham.
