Seven forwards and one defenseman were announced Tuesday as semifinalists for the Travis Roy Award.
The award, the most prestigious in Maine boys high school hockey, is given each year to the top senior Class A player in the state.
The semifinalists come from five teams, including two apiece from Thornton Academy, Cheverus/Yarmouth and Falmouth.
Jake Skillings and Trent Lesieur play for Thornton, which is the reigning Class A champion, the top seed in this year’s postseason, the top-ranked team in the Varsity Maine poll, and the home of last year’s Travis Roy winner, Drew Johnson.
Jacoby Porter, the lone defenseman semifinalist, and Cale Hanson represent Falmouth, while Hakon Yeo and Ben Dumais play for Cheverus/Yarmouth.
The other semifinalists are Aizyk Laliberte of the Lewiston co-op and Chase Caron of the Twin City Titans (a co-op of players from Bangor, Brewer, Skowhegan and Narraguagus).
The finalists will be announced Sunday. The winner of the award will be honored at the Class A hockey banquet at the Augusta Civic Center on March 14 at 12:30 p.m.
Seven of the eight semifinalists will play in Class A semifinals Wednesday at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The games were originally slated for Tuesday but were moved because of snow in the weather forecast.
Second-seeded Cheverus/Yarmouth faces the third-seeded Lewiston co-op at 6 p.m., and No. 5 Falmouth and No. 1 Thornton play at 8 p.m. The Class B South final between top-seeded Gorham/Massabesic and the No. 2 York co-op will also be played at Cross Insurance Arena, at 4 p.m.
No. 1 Messalonskee and the second-seeded Hampden co-op will battle in the B North final at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Alfond Arena in Orono.
