The Central Maine Community College women’s basketball team opened the USCAA Division II national championship tournament with a 77-55 quarterfinal win over Penn State DuBois on Wednesday in Buffalo, New York.

The Mustangs, the tournament’s top seed, will face No. 4 Penn State York in the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m.

CMCC seized control early, outscoring the eighth-seeded Lions 17-6 in the first quarter and building a 37-17 lead by halftime.

Ava Smith led the Mustangs with 13 points, eight rebounds and six blocks. She also had three steals. Hunter Hartsgrove contributed 11 points and Breanna Dwyer scored 10 points.

CMCC forced 43 turnovers.

Three Penn State DuBois players recorded double-doubles: Elizabeth Hungville scored 13 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, Natalie Bowser tallied 13 points and 13 boards and Eden Wonderling finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

UMAINE-AUGUSTA 62, CHRISTENDOM 49: Bella Petrocci’s 16 points and a double-double by Annabelle Morris paced the Moose past the Crusaders in an USCAA quarterfinal in Buffalo, New York.

Morris finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Yvonne Roberge added 13 points and Lilian Cox contributed eight points and 10 rebounds for UMaine-Augusta.

The second-seeded Moose will face No. 3 Miami-Hamilton in the semifinals Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Christendom, the seventh seed, won the past two USCAA Division II titles. The Crusaders were led by Sydnie Villarreal’s 14 points. Georgie Snyder added 11 points and Mary Pennefathre had 10.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

CINCINNATI-CLERMONT 96, UMAINE-AUGUSTA 84: After winning a play-in game in exciting fashion Tuesday, the Moose dropped their USCAA quarterfinal to the Cougars on Wednesday in Buffalo, New York.

Five Cincinnati-Clermont scored in double figures, led by Robbie Johnson’s 22 points. Landon Naylor added 19 points, Caden Zeinner and AJ Robinson 17 apiece and Kenyon Gardner had 16.

Aviyon Matthews led UMaine-Augusta with 18 points and nine rebounds. Rocco Chang scored 16 points and Khalif Bettis tallied 15 points and eight rebounds.

UMaine-Augusta plays a consolation-round game against Kent State-Tuscarawas on Thursday at 1 p.m.

In Tuesday’s play-in game against Andrews, the Moose overcame a 24-point deficit and prevailed 70-69 on a 3-pointer by Donte Sharp with 0.5 second left. Sharp finished with 27 points.
