The Thornton Academy boys hockey team lost its second game of the season, then won its next 19. The Golden Trojans took over the No. 1 spot in the Varsity Maine boys hockey rankings the second week of the season, and never gave it up. They became the unanimous No. 1 on Jan. 6, and remained so through this week’s final poll of the season — that’s 10 straight weeks. Most importantly, they capped the stellar season with their second consecutive Class A championship.

One more thing: Thornton finished the season with a 20-1 record. No other team in the state lost less than four games.

A few Class B teams have had spots in the Varsity Maine rankings throughout the season, but not the two who are in 2025-26’s final poll. York/Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach is third after winning the Class B title, which the claimed by defeating the No. 4 team, Hampden/MDI/Ellsworth/Nokomis.

Cheverus/Yarmouth moved up a spot after being ranked third last week. No. 5 Falmouth joined the rankings for the first time Feb. 17 and remained in the poll through the end.
