Sun glistened off the water as a group of about 20 hikers set off on Portland’s Back Cove trail Saturday morning.
Led by Portland Park Ranger Taylor Dugan and City Naturalist Angela Howard, the hike was the first in a series of walks where participants can hike with city park rangers, explore local trails and parks and get some insight into plants and wildlife.
“We’re really excited to kick this off,” Howard said. “We wanted to connect more with the community and connect with the parks. It’s a growing community in Portland.”
Organized by Portland Parks and Recreation, the hikes will take place at least twice a month throughout the city. Each walk will be led by a park ranger or special guests who are experts in their field, like Howard.

The walks are beginner-friendly and local, making them accessible to almost everyone who wants to get outside.
“The whole goal is to get more people outside and meet the community, and learn more about the parks we have in Portland,” Howard said. “We have so many great ones at our fingertips.”
Kittery resident Katie Fabiano traveled to Portland for the walk on Saturday. She wanted to join the hike club because she thinks it’s important to explore everything Portland has to offer and get to know different members of the community.

“It’s nice to take time to enjoy the little things, like the beautiful sparkling water,” Fabiano said.
Luke Emerdello and Justin Pascone, who both live in Portland, took their children on Saturday’s hike.
Sitting atop their fathers’ shoulders, Ben Emerdello and Piper Pascone, both 2, squealed with joy.
“It’s nice to be out in nature and enjoy a little bit of spring finally, finally, finally,” Luke Emerdello said. “It’s always fun to be outside with the kids and give them an interest in nature.”
Hikes are scheduled for every other Saturday morning throughout the spring, with each hike taking place in a different location to highlight Portland’s expansive trail systems.
“This is awesome,” Dugan said. “We want people to keep coming back.”
