The other three spring sports rankings have unanimous No. 1s, but the Varsity Maine baseball poll doesn’t even have a conclusive No. 1. Instead, there’s a rare tie at the top between South Portland and Oxford Hills. The Red Riots, second in last week’s poll, garnered five first-place votes to the Vikings three. The difference is that all but one voter put Oxford Hills in the top three, while two voters put South Portland outside the top three.
Blame (or credit, depending on your appreciation of chaos) for the first-place tie probably goes to Mt. Ararat, which reminded the state that it is the reigning Class A North champion by taking down last week’s No. 1, Bangor. That moved the Eagles into the rankings and No. 8, while the Rams are fifth (though one voter still believes them to be the No. 1 team in the state).
Cheverus and Gorham each jumped three spots to No. 3 and 4, respectively. Those teams face off Tuesday. The result of that game might create more confusion about who is the state’s top team. So, too, might Oxford Hills’ showdown with Bangor on Friday in Bangor.
The Varsity Maine baseball poll is based on games played before May 5, 2026. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
