Editor’s note: Each week during the fall sports season, Varsity Maine will highlight a boys and girls team of the week. The teams, picked by staff members, will take into account several factors, including success stories, bounce-back efforts and notable accomplishments, among others. Athletes, coaches and athletic directors can nominate teams by emailing sports editor Bill Stewart at [email protected] or Varsity Maine editor Lee Horton at [email protected].

Varsity Maine Girls Team of the Week: Lewiston/Lisbon volleyball

The Blue Devils finished 16th of 18 teams in Class A last year and went 2-12 in 2024, but they have been perfect so far this fall. They won three straight road matches to start the season, defeating Brunswick on Sept. 3, Brewer on Sept. 5 and Mt. Ararat on Friday. Lewiston/Lisbon (4-0) then defeated Hampden Academy in its first home match on Monday. The Blue Devils have yet to lose a set.

If anyone is shocked, it’s certainly not Jennifer Curlee. Lewiston’s third-year coach noted that the Blue Devils have had plenty of talent in recent years but have been waiting it for it to start meshing at the same time. Needless to say, that’s exactly what has happened this year — and now the Blue Devils know that opposing teams are taking notice.

“After the first win, everybody’s like, ‘Huh, whatever,’ but after the second win, we’re now on people’s radars,” Curlee said. “So, now I tell the girls, ‘Everybody’s out to prove us wrong, so we’ve got to come at them with that bigger chip on our shoulder,’ which is what Lewiston is known for or thought of. I’m glad to lean into it.”
