A man narrowly escaped a fire Saturday at his home in Farmingdale with help from a neighbor, officials said.
Colin Mulhern, 60, was assisted off his back deck and away from the fire by a neighbor, according to a release from Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Mulhern was first taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta then flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The house at 10 Roberta St. sustained significant fire and smoke damage after flames sparked on or near a couch in the living area, investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal said. Officials said the fire’s cause is still under investigation.
Farmingdale firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about 20 minutes, keeping it mostly contained to the the living room, said Capt. Julian Beale, of the Farmingdale Fire Department.
“I think everyone did a great job,” Beale said. “We had a quick response and a quick knockdown, and I was able to … keep it from spreading to the whole house.”
