Editor’s note: Each week during the fall sports season, Varsity Maine will highlight a boys and girls team of the week. The teams, picked by staff members, will take into account several factors, including success stories, bounce-back efforts and notable accomplishments, among others. Athletes, coaches and athletic directors can nominate teams by emailing sports editor Bill Stewart at [email protected] or Varsity Maine editor Lee Horton at [email protected].

Varsity Maine Boys Team of the Week: Mountain Valley boys soccer

The Falcons didn’t enter the fall as an expected contender in Class C South. In fact, in the past three years, the team has totaled four wins.

But after eight games, the Falcons own a 4-2-2 record and sit at No. 2 in the C South Heal point standings, just below defending state champion Hall-Dale (6-1).

“Last year, we only won one game. It was tough,” said Mountain Valley coach JT Taylor. “Sometimes you’ve got to take your licks before you can get to where you need to be.”

Last week, the Falcons picked up a 2-1 win over Maranacook and a 4-3 victory in a Class C/D crossover against Buckfield. Mountain Valley opened its season by showing it can hang with the division’s best teams, falling 2-1 to Mt. Abram.

“It’s so much more fun,” said Mountain Valley senior Cash Provencher. “We’re starting to become the team that other teams (don’t) want to play. … Change your expectations about us and watch out in the future.”

The Falcons still have a tough road ahead, including matches with Hall-Dale on Oct. 14 and Monmouth Academy in the regular-season finale on Oct. 19.
