WARREN – With hearts full of love and respect, the family of Robert Barry Cumler, 72, of Warren announces his passing on Sept. 23, 2026. Bob will be remembered as a respected attorney, a true sportsman and a loyal and generous man to family and friends.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Robert and Ruth Barry Cumler, Bob was the second of six children. The family moved several times between Ohio and Maine and spent fun-filled summers at the family camp on Cobbossecontee Lake in Manchester. The property remained in the family for over 60 years and was loved by generations. Bob graduated from Granville High School in Granville, Ohio, where he played basketball and formed lifelong friendships.

He took undergraduate and postgraduate classes at the University of Maine at Orono and graduated from Colby College in 1977. In 1984, Bob obtained his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now known as the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law. Tuition was paid by running heavy equipment on construction sites in the summers in Ohio with his brother, Tom, and occasionally with his father. He also dug clams in Friendship, rowing from Garrison Island to his favorite spots on the Meduncook River.

While studying at Orono, Bob met his future wife, Holly Carlson, in the botany lab and they recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. His legal career began in 1984 when he joined Jim Davidson’s practice in Waldoboro, continuing the practice with Peter Lynch under the name Cumler & Lynch. At the time of his retirement at the end of 2025, Nicholas Stiles had joined the firm, along with Rachel Klotz, under the name Cumler, Lynch & Stiles. Bob was a dedicated lawyer for 41 years who found the work and the relationships he formed there highly satisfying. Barbara, Jess, Jodi, and Abby were all loyal staff whom he depended on and counted among his friends. Boating in Friendship with Holly and Cranberry Island picnics with his entire family were favorite traditions for many years. Bob loved planning and cooking for all family gatherings. He cooked most dishes without using recipes, and was humble when people complimented his food.

Many weekends were spent with great friends partridge hunting and fishing for salmon and brook trout around Caratunk, Moosehead Lake, Wilson Pond and Grand Lake Stream. Dix Island provided more special times with friends to dig clams, deer hunt, and relax around blazing fires. At home, Bob stayed busy with yard work, growing vegetables and rooting for the Patriots and Celtics. In Florida, Bob would fish for tripletail for hours with Holly, and travel to different beaches by boat if the fish weren’t biting. He took up biking around the neighborhood in the past few years, and enjoyed making new friends. Bob’s last two memorable trips were to Portugal and Spain with most of his family, and extended trip to New Zealand with Holly to travel the wild backroads and fish. At the end of each vacation, Bob was always ready to get back to the office. His work, his family, and his many friends meant the world to him.

Bob is survived by his wife, Holly Cumler; brother, Tom Cumler and his wife Addy Cumler; sisters, Ruth Cumler, Cathy Cumler-Dennis and her husband Peter Dennis, Patty Cumler-Bryant and her husband, Bill Bryant; nephews, Joshua Cumler and his wife, Hannah Cumler; Colby Wieland and his fiance Nikki Hickey, Sam Bryant and his wife Carissa Bryant; nieces, Gillian Bryant, Hannah Cumler, Callie Arculeo and her husband Ryan; great nieces Zoe Cumler and Zara Arculeo; and great nephews Bobby Cumler and Phineas Cumler.

The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care that Bob received at Windward Gardens in Camden. We are incredibly grateful for the skilled care, the kindness and compassion shown by everyone, and the respect shown to Bob in his final days.

Please join us in remembering Bob on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for visiting hours and refreshments from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Broad Bay Congregational United Church of Christ at 941 Main Street in Waldoboro, Maine.
