I was disappointed by a recent news report (“As life in Maine gets more expensive, young people struggle to keep up,” Sept. 18). As a proud Augusta resident who left Portland years ago due to — go figure — rising costs and lack of opportunity, I thought it quite rich to ascribe to my neighbor the feeling that he was “stuck in central Maine.”
The report itself makes clear my neighbor was attributing that sentiment to his friends in — I guess, to the reporter — more desirable locales, not necessarily speaking about his own feelings.
Some people want to live in Maine, even up here in the scary boondocks of central Maine, because it’s a great place to live, with great people. It’s disappointing that the reporting ignores that possibility.
Honestly, that last line (“Maybe, for now, he is [stuck].”) angered and offended me.
“Maybe,” indeed.
