FAIRFIELD — You would have expected it from the Cony Rams. But from the Lawrence football team? Airing it out? Blasphemy.
Well, not Friday night. Sure, Lawrence’s running game put up gaudy numbers, as usual, but it was the passing game that made the difference in the Bulldogs’ 35-27 victory over Cony.
Jackson Dangler threw four touchdown passes as Lawrence won a battle of unbeaten Class B North teams at Keyes Field. The outcome sent the Bulldogs to the top of the region and snapped the Rams’ streak of 12 straight Pine Tree Conference wins.
“Like I said at the beginning of the season, I’ll pass when I need to, and tonight was one of those nights, I guess,” Dangler said. “I just threw it when I needed to against a team with good (defensive backs in) Cony. … We all stepped up, and it was great.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lawrence (5-0) ran the ball at will on the opening drive, which culminated in a 37-yard touchdown run by Keegan Littlefield. The Bulldogs then snuffed out a Cony fake punt, after which Dangler found Miles Provost for a 23-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
Dangler’s second touchdown pass, a 9-yarder to Provost, put Lawrence up 21-0 with 6:40 left in the half.
Drew Lindquist threw a 5-yard pass to Jacob Fifield to put Cony (4-1) on the board with 1:31 left, but Lawrence answered on the final play of the half, as Dangler found Hunter Curtis for an 11-yard score.
Cony began to stuff the Lawrence run game in the second half, and a huge third quarter from Lindquist — 172 yards passing — included two more touchdown passes to Fifield. Those plays bookended another passing score for the Bulldogs — 60 yards from Dangler to Littlefield.
“We’ve been practicing that all year,” Lawrence coach Pete Curtis said of the final touchdown pass, a beautifully executed wheel route. “We haven’t had to throw the ball much during a game, but we knew we could. We have a capable quarterback in Jackson, and he was on tonight.”
Cony got back within one score on the second play of the fourth quarter, as Lindquist scrambled 11 yards into the end zone on third-and-goal. The Rams got the ball back late with a chance to tie, but Lawrence forced a three-and-out before running out the clock.
WHAT IT MEANS
• Lawrence has the inside track for the No. 1 seed in Class B North. That was always the likely outcome of Friday’s game, and wins next week at Brunswick, at Camden Hills on Oct. 17 and at home against Messalonskee on Oct. 24 would clinch the top spot for the Bulldogs.
• Cony hadn’t lost against a PTC opponent since a 28-18 defeat to Lawrence in the 2024 North semifinals. Still, Cony coach B.L. Lippert was pleased his young team didn’t wither in the face of adversity — and with Kingston Cox, one of its top players, sidelined because of an injury.
“We played hard all night long; we just got off to a bad start,” Lippert said. “We’ve seen it all year. (We won late) at Fryeburg, and we won against Skowhegan late. This team’s got some grit and some toughness. … When we get (Anderson Noyes) back (from injury), we’re going to be even more dangerous.”
UNSUNG HERO
Lawrence’s Brady Richards. It’s hard to call Provost “unsung” given that the junior caught two touchdown passes. So, the nod goes (again) to Richards, who was massively disruptive on defense and notched a strip-sack on special teams on Cony’s fake punt in the first quarter.
“He’s always been there, ever since he stepped in in the state game his freshman year,” Dangler said. “He’s definitely one of the best players I’ve ever seen and one of the best I’ll ever play with.”
NOTABLE QUOTABLE
“I think it’s very special (to get a big homecoming win), but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got to come back to practice and work, and when we see those guys again, it’ll be a different game.” — Miles Provost
