SKOWHEGAN — The defense attorney for an Anson man charged with murder has decided it’s not necessary for the court to suppress certain statements the man made to police.

Defense Attorney Phil Mohlar and Assistant Attorney General Leane Zainea spoke in chambers Tuesday morning. When they appeared in court, they agreed to not argue before a judge about whether to suppress what Robert Nelson, 41, told investigators.

Nelson is accused of shooting 60-year-old Everett Cameron as he sat in his pickup truck in Anson more than two years ago. He faces charges of intentional or knowing murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

When Somerset County Superior Court opened on Tuesday, Judge John Nivison said the hearing was originally scheduled because of the defense attorney’s motion to suppress.

However, “My understanding is the parties have reached an agreement,” he said.

After the brief hearing, Mohlar said that motions to suppress are usually made when someone says things that could hurt his or her defense. That didn’t happen in Nelson’s case, he said, so he decided the motion was unnecessary.

“My client has steadfastly maintained his innocence,” he said.

Zainea declined to comment.

Nelson faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of murder. Nelson was indicted and arrested on Sept. 16. Police said he shot Cameron as he sat parked on a small dirt path off Town Farm Road on Oct. 31, 2009.
