RICHMOND — The driver of an ice cream truck who was charged last week with drug possession as he made his rounds was carrying just more than an ounce of marijuana, police said Thursday.

Police Chief Scott MacMaster said Travis Wilson, 24, of West Gardiner, was found with four “roaches” — remnants of a smoked marijuana cigarette — and a smaller marijuana joint. Wilson was summoned on a charge of marijuana possession.

A Freedom Way resident called police Saturday morning after noticing Wilson’s ice cream truck driving slowly through a neighborhood where no children lived. The caller worried the truck might actually be cover for a home burglary scheme, MacMaster said.

Police caught up with Wilson’s truck about 11:30 a.m. at Richmond High School. As the officer approached the truck he could smell marijuana, MacMaster said. Wilson turned over the marijuana when questioned by police.

Wilson was not charged with operating under the influence of drugs because he was not noticeably impaired, MacMaster said.

MacMaster said the truck did contain ice cream for sale.

Wilson was issued the summons and asked to move along, MacMaster said.
