We did it! Two-hundred twenty-four Litchfield residents signed petitions so we would have a choice at the June 18 annual town meeting: a choice between the current C&J animal shelter, an 8-by-12-foot box trailer, or the shelter at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society (KVHS) in Augusta.
The KVHS shelter will be on the warrant for the town meeting on Saturday, June 18, at 10 a.m. at the Carrie Ricker School gym, 573 Richmond R0ad. We did the leg work and got 51 more signatures than we needed. Now it’s time to show up and vote.
There is a chart on the Town of Litchfield Facebook page comparing the local C&J shelter with the shelter and services of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society. The chart was prepared by Dr. Colette Bonte, a veterinarian who lives in Litchfield, and Stevanie Roy, director of operations at the KVHS. The chart was reviewed by John Alexander, operator of C&J, and Kelly Weissenfels, Litchfield town manager.
The chart shows the many reasons the KVHS shelter is far superior to the C&J box trailer. For example, C&J does not accept surrendered animals. KVHS does. Through the town of Litchfield, C&J has $2,200 for emergency medical care. If medical care costs more than $2,200, the town will have to cover it. KVHS will pay an unlimited amount for medical care.
