Writer Earl Smith stands before the First Baptist Church, Waterville’s oldest standing public building, on Thursday. Smith’s “Waterville Village, The Story of Waterville, Maine,” is the second comprehensive history of the city of Waterville. The Rev. Edward Carey Whittemore, pastor of the First Baptist Church who was among those at the dedication of the Opera House 116 years ago, compiled the first history of Waterville.
