    If LePage vetoes budget, legislators must override

    Gov. Paul LePage's proposed budget is a disaster. If enacted, it would end the Homestead Property Tax exemption for those under 65, eliminate the Circuit Breaker program, and deny towns and schools hundreds of millions of dollars. This would force our towns to cut services or raise taxes, but LePage would maintain tax cuts for the wealthiest.

    State should regulate guns the way it does cars

    M.D. Harmon finally wrote a commentary (June 15) with which I can agree, in part. We should regulate guns and cars alike because each is dangerous only if used irresponsibly by unqualified people.

    Lawmakers acted wisely in keeping lobster bycatch ban

    The Legislature recently took a step to protect one of Maine's most valuable industries. L.D. 1549, "An Act To Provide an Exemption for Incidentally Caught Lobsters," died in the House of Representatives on June 11. This bill would have removed the penalty for groundfishermen who land offshore lobster bycatch from drag fishing. This bill didn't pass for a very good reason: Maine can't afford to lose its lobster population or the 7,000 jobs that are supported by the industry.

    Memorial Day not fitting for track meet date

    I would like to express my disappointment with the recent KVAC track meet that was rained out on May 25 and rescheduled for Memorial Day.

    Contract for BIW doesn’t help America

    I was distressed to read about the contract for destroyers awarded to Bath Iron Works for $2.8B. I know it is Maine jobs, but at what cost? The military people will tell us it is to protect our country. From whom? The Afghan military, Hezbollah or al Quaida? We know they are loaded with Navy ships.

    Support bill to reduce toxins in products

    I strongly support the new bill, L.D. 1181, which proposes to strengthen the Kid-Safe Products Act, Maine's innovative law that protects children from toxic chemicals. L.D. 1181 fosters progress on the front of toxic chemical policy. The passing of the Kid-Safe Products Act in 2008 represents a landmark in chemical policy reform. This act is considered a success in protecting children from BPA, a known endocrine disruptor.

    RSU 18 voice of reason lost with resignation

    Regional School Unit 18 suffered a huge loss in the form of Donna Doucette's resignation from the school board. Donna, a tireless advocate for teachers and children, was one of the only members of that school board who dared question the path that RSU 18's administration is taking toward a new educational vision and mass customized learning. It should concerns us all -- both residents of Belgrade, China, Oakland, Rome and Sidney and communities across the state -- that Donna has seen no other course than to resign after more than 20 years on the board.

    Maloney’s reasoning doesn’t make sense

    Was Adam J. Keene properly charged with reckless conduct by District Attorney Maeghan Maloney? In a June 6 article she described why she decided to charge Keene with reckless conduct after his handgun was discovered in his son's backpack while at daycare. Maloney first indicated that she approved a misdemeanor charge because she was convinced that placing the gun in the backpack was not intentional. Maloney stated "that's why it is not a felony."

    Problem of addiction must be recognized

    Rarely a week passes any more that the headlines involving the victim(s) of addiction do not make the news here in the Kennebec Valley area.
