A new class — a real upper class — is developing

I agree with those who speak about the importance of the middle class. I also hope the middle class some day can consist of folks who have to scrape a little less than they have to now.

Definition of marriage must not be tampered with

I take issue with Frank O'Hara's remarks concerning the diocesan marriage forums that appeared in the Kennebec Journal article, "Diocese starts marriage defense plans" (Sept. 6).

Plourde made adaptive equipment program work

I am writing to show my support of Penny Plourde, the Democratic candidate running for Senate District 24. I have known Plourde personally and professionally for 20-plus years. I worked with Plourde through my employment at the Finance Authority of Maine. She was a board member for the Kim Wallace Adaptive Equipment Loan Program Fund […]

Can we apply moral, honor, sacrifice to the wealthy?

Joseph Reisert’s hypocrisy (“Obama’s policies undermine honor of working poor’s sacrifice,” Sept. 7) illustrates the Republican Party’s rationale for destroying Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other programs designed to keep Americans from abject poverty. According to Reisert’s column, the poor (and middle class) should want to “work through physical pain” and “sacrifice” because it’s the […]

More than two choices for president this year

Liz Soares’ column on Sunday (Sept. 9) reminded me of the dilemma of a person who will not own an automobile because she likes neither the current Ford nor the alternative offered by Chevrolet. Those are the only options one has, right? Two choices will always suffice. Along with millions of other Americans, I am […]

    Interesting news about Condoleezza Rice

A couple of recent news items just beg to be addressed. They both refer to Condoleezza Rice. First of all, that golfer’s club in Augusta, Ga., used to restrict its membership to men. It recently had a change of heart and allowed two women to become members, one of whom was Rice. Secondly, she was […]

Little evidence Iranian leadership is suicidal

Charles Krauthammer (“‘Deterrence works’ is a fantasy in context of Israel-Iran conflict,” Sept. 9), can be counted on to convey the Israeli hard line on Iran, complete with highly dubious rationales. He relies on conjuring up the Iranian leadership as the “mad mullahs” bent on nuking Israel, which he describes as a “one-bomb” country open […]

Marriage equality won’t make rivers run uphill

A recent letter to the editor tells us that same-sex marriage would destroy society. Let’s think about this. Same-sex couples already live together throughout Maine. They are our neighbors, our family members, our doctors, our lawyers, our carpenters and our friends. Same-sex couples are together because two people fell in love and decided to make […]

Obama good at speeches, not so much at leading

President Barack Obama is traveling about the country making speeches that sound like those he made four years ago. He is very good at making speeches, His writers are excellent. Re-electing him for four more years in the White House, however, would be like re-electing Gov. Paul LePage for another term. Ezra Smith Winthrop

Virtual schools would be free of local oversight

Colin Woodard’s extensive piece of investigative reporting (article, Sept. 2) reveals a significant threat to local control of our public schools and to public education itself. If the proposed virtual schools are permitted, control of educational content and teacher qualifications will pass to for-profit corporations. These commercial operations would prepare digital lessons to be delivered […]
