Veterinarian will be missed by owners, pets
I was stunned to hear that veterinarian Dr. Alan Slack had passed away. it seemed only yesterday he was helping our Bunny cat’s injured tail with his gentle, always kind way. Jesus must have been searching for a veterinarian to help care for all the animals in heaven. I believe he has filled the position […]

Sympathy given to family, friends of veterinarian
A great man, Dr. Alan Slack, has passed. The death of this wonderful, kind and caring friend and veterinarian was a shock to all who knew and loved him, and his loss will be felt for a long time. Dr. Slack was always there for us, day or night, when our pets needed him. Over […]

Against natural gas line
When I first heard about the natural gas line that may be installed through Farmingdale, I thought it was good to give people another source of heat. Then I got a letter showing the main route of the gas line; it goes right by our home on Northern Avenue. That didn’t bother me, but what […]

‘An act of God’ — let’s keep God out of politics
In response to Maine Housing Board Chairman Peter Anastos’ remark (KJ, Dec. 4) that Dale McCormick could lose her job only by “an act of God,” may I suggest that that may be how she got it. On one hand, let’s keep God out of politics, and, on the other hand, whose God? Don Stratton […]

No one should be banned from state property
Capitol Police have forbidden nine supporters and one long-time occupant of Occupy Augusta from entering Capitol Park, the Blaine House grounds, the State House or any state property in Augusta. They were given criminal trespass notices with no expiration date. If they attend a public hearing or lobby in the State House, they could spend […]

Ashamed of all those in office, what they are doing
I never thought I would see the day that politicians could make such a mess of this country. I realize that the liberals have been working at it for a long time, and they seem to be succeeding at the moment. I did not realize that there were so many Marxists and communists in this […]

Woolston Crossing an engineering miracle
There was the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, the Great Wall of China. Now there is the Incredible Crossing located in Winthrop at the railroad tracks. Thanks to our new town manager, Jeff Woolston, the “bump” that has plagued us for years has been fixed. We should consider calling this Woolston Crossing. Ben Thomas Winthrop

Society of coercion or one of virture and morals?
I had the unfortunate experience of reading Mike Tipping’s column titled: “Health Care Cuts, Tax Cuts Demonstrate Skewed Priorities.” He spoke about morals, yet his piece uttered the exact opposite. What morals exist when government uses coercion to take the labor of productive members of society to provide for the benefits of others? Is there […]

Concourse parkers not considerate to customers
It has come to my attention that downtown parking is being misused by employees or business owners in the Concourse. Some of these people are parking in non-star spots that should be available for use by customers shopping downtown. My mother would love to shop downtown more; she likes the personal service from the businesses […]

A tribute to a caring veterinarian for long ago act
When I was 10, my family lived on Covell Road, with fields, a stand of trees and a meandering stream. Among my close companions of my youth was a gray cat, Trotsky, named by my parents for the Russian revolutionary Marxist, which tells you something about their sense of humor. One day, I was home […]
