Portland artist Daniel Minter begins the process of hanging and arranging work for an art show at the historical Abyssinian Meeting House. The show opens at 5:30 p.m. on May 5 for the First Friday Art Walk.
A century after its congregation dissolved, Minter aims to bring the Abyssinian Meeting House back to its original purpose as a gathering place for black people.
Minter's wood carving and painting of famous blues artist Ma Rainey sits on a ledge at the meeting house.
A work by Boston-based artist and Bates College graduate Clyde Bango waits to be hung as part of the show.

The show, called "A Distant Holla," features work from Minter, David Driskell, Elizabeth Jabar, Rafeal Clariot, Ebenezer Akapko, Titi de Baccarat, TEoC and Derek Jackson, with music by Michael Wingfield, Samuel James and Ahmad Kalari.
