Tom Chase clears out part of a beaver damn that builds up and washes out an entrance road at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Township 3, Range 7. Chase does maintenance work at the park for Lucas St. Clair's company, Elliotsville Plantation, Inc. St. Clair's mother Roxanne Quimby created the company to manage the land that would become the monument.

From left, Douglas McCafferty, 80, and his brother, Edward McCafferty, 88, have lunch at a scenic overlook at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The brothers came down for the day to check out the new monument for the first time, though Douglas said they used to snow sled through the woods. The McCaffertys both worked their entire careers in the mills and have seen the area suffer since the closures. Douglas said he thinks anything that will help bring money into the area is a good thing.
