Lewis Goddard packs a parachute before jumping behind German lines while serving with Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Last year, students of Shane Gower’s at Maranacook Community High School built a memorial to Goddard, who died during the jump into occupied France.
Maranacook Community High School teacher Shane Gower hopes he’s able to visit the grave of 1st Sgt. Lewis F. Goddard during a trip to France and Italy as part of the Understanding Sacrifice program.
The mother of 1st Sgt. Lewis F. Goddard received a letter from the Office of Strategic Services notifying her of his death in France during World War II. Under the direction of teacher Shane Gower, students at Maranacook Community High School studied the life and death of Goddard, whose brother lives in Richmond.
