Jason Brooks, 11, protects his ice cream cone from a pair of hens he cares for Sunday, Aug. 2, at his home in Waterville. Brooks and his family converted a playhouse to a chicken coop with the help of their dad who is a carpenter. The family gathers up to four eggs a day. The seven laying hens were hand raised by the family. Merida, the hen at left, was named after a character in the Disney movie "Brave," according to the family.

Deb Moody picks blueberries Tuesday at Pine Acres Farm in Skowhegan. The patch features seven varieties of blueberries, according to farm owner Randy Parsons. There is also a roadside stand at the farm. Parsons' grandfather, William Parsons, founded Pine Acres Farm in 1941. The blueberry patch was established in 2000. The farm has been in operation for three generations.
