Keith Bushey gave a city marshal’s badge from his collection to the Augusta Police Department on Wednesday in Augusta. The man in the photo is believed to be City Marshal Dennis Donovan, who held the office from 1906 to 1907. He appears to be wearing the same badge.

George Shaw, of Pittston, jacks his smelt camp off the Kennebec River in Pittston on Tuesday. As the river ice has built up, the persistence of freezing temperatures has kept the base of the camp below the ice surface all winter, he said. With a thaw inevitable, Shaw elevated the camp off the ice to be able to pull it ashore quickly. He estimates that more than 2 feet of ice remain on the river.
