As the river ice has built up, the persistence of freezing temperatures has kept the base of the camp below the ice surface all winter, he said. With a thaw inevitable, Shaw elevated the camp off the ice to be able to pull it ashore quickly. He estimates that more than 2 feet of ice remain on the river.
