    Dan O’Laughlin tosses wood Tuesday into the shed attached to the West Gardiner home he shares with his wife, Nancy. The retired teacher and coach said he cuts the trees in the spring, splits the wood by hand in the summer and stacks it in the fall before burning it all winter. He went through six cords last year and has eight ready for the stove this season.

    Farmingdale Assistant Fire Chief Mike LaPlante escorts Ella Cotnoir, 8, beneath power lines that trapped her family Sunday in their SUV on Maple Street in Farmingdale for over an hour. Central Maine Power crews were able to turn the power off and Farmingdale firefighters were able to extricate the Cotnoir family. The West Gardiner family, who were returning from church services, was uninjured.
