Angela (Beaudoin) Mergel talks about her late Cony basketball teammate Chrisanne Burns on Saturday during a presentation during the Chrisanne Burns Memorial Tournament at Cony High School. She was the first recipient of a Chrisanne Burns scholarship. Burns was 19 at the time of her death in 1993 and a sophomore at Green Mountain College in Vermont. The tournament in her memory began the following year. It spreads the message of not drinking and driving with the theme “Think, it could happen to you,” written on thousands of T-shirts that have been distributed to participants over the years. The scholarship that is funded by the tournament and other donations has given away $38,750 in scholarships to 27 Cony female athletes over the last 20 years.
