Effort to protect kids from BPA in food is not over
As a person who values access to healthy food, I have become very concerned about the toxic chemical bisphenol-A, which is found in many linings of cans and jars and gets into the food that we eat.

NRA member has no problem registering guns
I am in full agreement with the letter, "Background checks don't infringe on gun rights" (June 25) by Richard Wheeler. I have a few and would not mind registering them. I belong to the NRA.

Will new health care plan treat mentally ill criminals?
If the nation's new health care program is real, all the mentally ill we now lock up in our jails should be transferred to mental health hospitals for proper treatment.

‘Circuit breaker’ program repeal is a disgrace
We got little to no property tax relief from this Legislature. For the past several years, we have qualified for property tax relief through the "circuit breaker" program.

With Medicare/Medicaid, we don’t need Obamacare
When I go to a hospital and say, "thank God for LBJ," my words often are met with a questioning look. I explain that those are the initials of a great man named Lyndon Baynes Johnson. As our president, he not only signed the Civil Rights Act, but initiated Medicare, protecting everyone as they reached the age of 65.

Plenty of speeders for police on South Solon Road
Is there any way for the county or state police to send a traffic detachment to South Solon "Raceway" (Road)? Saturday or Sunday probably would be the most productive days.

Dangerous train travels along Maranacook shores
George Smith (column, July 17) wrote about the dangers my neighbors and I fear daily as we watch the long line of tanker cars being pulled along the western shore of Lake Maranacook, just 1/4 mile from us on the eastern shore.

Federal law gives access for military recruiters
My family holds those who serve in the military in the highest regard. My father, Richard Duke Caron, is a Marine and served on the front lines in the Korean War; my son served with the U.S. Coast Guard; and I help plant 15,000 American flags by the tombs of fallen veterans every Memorial Day.

Kennedy breakdown lane in Oakland no parking lot
Several nights per month, I pass between 15 and 25 cars parked in the breakdown lane of Kennedy Memorial Drive in front of KMD Driving School (Oakland). I cannot understand why the Oakland police and town officials allow this to happen.
