SKOWHEGAN — Travis Hosea pitched a shutout and Dylan Cunningham had three hits as Messalonskee defeated North Franklin, 14-0, Saturday, on the opening day of the Cal Ripken 12U state tournament at the Carl Wright Complex.
Jake Perry added a home run and a single and Sean Roderigue singled twice for Messalonskee. The game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Messalonskee plays Marshwood at 10 a.m., Sunday in a winner’s bracket game. Marshwood posted an 11-1 victory over Maranacook in four innings.
Sunday’s other winner’s bracket game is also at 10 a.m., and matches Andy Valley and Ararat. Andy Valley blanked River Valley, 10-0, in four innings on Saturday on a one-hitter by Janelb Lukasza. Will Laflamme added a double and Rodney Bean and Matt Johnson singled for the winner. Allen Peabody singled for River Valley.
Ararat posted a 10-1 win over Skowhegan. Charlie Manuel doubled and singled for Ararat, while Matthew Berry, Braden McCarty, and Carter Hunt each had a hit for Skowhegan.
Sunday’s loser’s bracket games are both at 12:30, with North Franklin facing Maranacook and River Valley taking on Skowhegan. The losers of the 10 a.m. games will play the winners of the 12:30 games at 3:30.
