A Sidney man was found dead Thursday near Hatch Cove in Great Pond in Belgrade with his unmanned boat moving in circles nearby, authorities said.
The body of George F. Bonney, 64, was recovered from the lake just before noon, according to a news release from Cpl. John MacDonald, of the Maine Warden Service.
Bonney, who was not wearing a life jacket, had been alone in his 16-foot 2001 fishing boat.
Maine game wardens had been notified of the circling motorboat and one warden, Kris MacCabe, was able to jump into it and shut off the motor, the release said.
A member of the Belgrade Fire Department found Bonney’s body, and it was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta so officials could determine the manner and cause of death.
“Bonney was found floating on the surface in about 7 feet of water,” the release stated.
MacDonald said incident remains under investigation.
