Idasia Santos, 13, of the Bronx, N.Y., gets a hug from her host mother Rebecca Pushard of Manchester after arriving at the Augusta Civic Center on Friday evening. Santos is one of 23 children from New York City spending the next few weeks in the Augusta/Waterville area with host families as part of the Fresh Air Fund program, and this is the second year in a row Santos has spent part of her summer with the Pushard family. The Fresh Air fund is a not-for-profit agency that enables disadvantaged youths from New York City to stay with host families in rural and suburban communities from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Last year close to 5,000 youngsters visited host families, and since 1877, 1.7 million New York City children have benefited from the program.
