WATERVILLE — The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program is taking pre-applicant screening worksheets for the federal Emergency Homeowner Loan Program.

The program provides mortgage payment assistance for homeowners in crisis for the next two years.

The pre-applicant screening period is open until July 22. Eligible applicants will be placed into a lottery to apply for assistance. A workshop will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Educare Central Maine, 56 Drummond Ave.

Some of the requirements for applicants include:

The applicants must have a substantial loss of income because of unemployment or underemployment because of the economy or medical condition; at least 90 days of late mortgage payments; received a written notice of intent to foreclose from the mortgage lender; all persons listed on the mortgage are U.S. citizens. The applicant also cannot be in bankruptcy, have more than two liens on the home, or be in any federal debt.
