CARRYING PLACE TOWNSHIP — The body of a New York man was recovered Friday along a remote section of the Appalachian Trail in northern Franklin County.
Edie Smith, spokeswoman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said the unidentified man apparently fell while hiking, hit his head and died.
Four game wardens and Maine State Police were sent to the area after the initial report came in about 10 a.m. Friday.
The body was discovered by other hikers on the Appalachian Trail, according to Smith. It will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for an autopsy.
The exact cause of death has not been determined, Smith said. The man’s identity is not being released until after his family members are notified.
The man, in his 40s, was spotted in an area between Long Falls Dam Road and Bog Road, about a mile up the Appalachian Trail from Long Falls Dam Road.
The area is 15 to 20 miles north of Somerset County’s New Portland, where Long Falls Dam Road begins.
Recovery teams from Franklin County and Sugarloaf Rescue assisted.
