AUGUSTA — Anyone interested in running for the office of district supervisor for the Kennebec County Soil and Water Conservation District should contact the district office at 21 Enterprise Drive, Suite 1, Augusta or call 622-7847, ext. 3, for nominating papers.
Nomination requires 25 valid signatures, and papers must be received no later than Oct. 31.
One three-year term is available. Candidates must live within the boundaries of the Kennebec County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 29.
Semester of Service grants available
AUGUSTA — The Maine Commission for Community Service will award 14 grants of $500 each to implement Semester of Service projects.

Hallowell cleanupto start Oct. 11
HALLOWELL — The city has scheduled its annual fall cleanup for Oct. 11-23 at the public works garage, 286 Water St.
City residents can dispose of such bulky waste as washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, carpets, matresses, furniture, toys and other items free of charge.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners or any other appliance that uses Freon gas as a coolant will not be accepted, nor will tires, asphalt shingles or regular household rubbish.
Household hazardous waste and electronics, such as computer monitors, televisions and fluorescent bulbs, also will not be accepted.
Hazardous waste and electronics are collected annually at regional events in which Hallowell participates, usually taking place in the spring in Augusta.
The city will have the site staffed to accept waste from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the cleanup. Questions regarding the event should be directed to public works at 622-3993 or the city manager’s office at 623-4021.
Manchester to weigh shoreland issues
MANCHESTER — The Planning Board meets Tuesday for three proposals for conditional uses within the shoreland district.
The three proposals for the shoreland zone, according to Code Enforcement Officer Paul Mitnik, are from Kerry Sue Walters for demolition and reconstruction of a residence on Sunset Drive; from David Keselica and Evie Swan to build a garage on Bayview Shores Road; and from Brian Jones to build a shed on Williamson Road.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Town Office.
