FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue snapped a three-game losing skid Monday afternoon at Prescott Field with a 2-0 win over Cony in an Eastern Maine Class A girls soccer game.
Mt. Blue (4-5-1) received an outstanding defensive effort in registering the shutout for goalkeeper Thia Bridges, who made just two saves. Cony keeper Melanie Guzman was equally impressive, making four saves on 11 Mt. Blue shots.
Cony defeated Mt. Blue, 2-1, in the opening game of the season.
“We have come a long way since the first time we faced Cony,” Cougar central defender Chelsea Newhall said. “We are talking a lot more and have stopped being so predictable in our play.”
After battling the Rams in the midfield area for the first 28 minutes, the Cougars found an opening and took quick advantage when a ball squirted past Guzman on the wet grass rolling to the back post. Mt. Blue’s Mackenzie Conlogue raced in from the left side and one-touched the ball into an open net for a 1-0 lead.
“This game was very frustrating for us,” Cony coach Jeff Hersey said. “Mt. Blue worked hard and deserved the goals, but we had opportunities and just didn’t pull the trigger.”
Cony pressured the Mt. Blue defense during the final stages of the first half but was unable to launch a shot at goal. Three times the Rams ventured into the penalty area only to be turned back by the swarming defense.
“This was an extremely big game for us,” Mt. Blue sweeper Jaycee Mullen said. “We knew we had to play hard and play together if we were going to beat Cony.”
Mt. Blue, which had not scored a goal in two weeks, found the mark a second time late in the second half. Newhall moved forward from her back position, calling for a pass from teammate Rachel Karno. Newhall settled the ball at the midfield circle and one-timed a lofted ball nearly 50 yards over Guzman’s head into the goal for a 2-0 advantage with 8:27 left in the game.
“I looked up and saw Cony’s goalkeeper had come out of the goal and called to Rachel for the ball,” Newhall said. “It worked just like I pictured it would. I was so excited.”
Cony’s defensive core group of Olivia Deeves, Alyssah Dennett, Alexis Dostie and Lindsey Quirion proved to be a tough combination in front of Guzman, stifling a number of Mt. Blue attempts as the Cougars tried to attack over the top of the Rams defense.
“Cony gave us a tough time on defense,” Mt. Blue coach Fred Conlogue said. “It was an important win for us in the Heal points and helped us get back on the winning track.”
