Police seek leads for stolen safe
NEW VINEYARD — Police are looking for leads after a large gun safe containing firearms, prescription pills and about $20,000 in cash was stolen from a home Monday afternoon in New Vineyard.
William Rogers, 62, owns the Wells Road house and told investigators he kept the cash, a handgun and seven rifles in the 5-foot-tall Sentry-brand gun safe that was taken while he was away, according to Franklin County Sheriff’s Lt. Niles Yeaton.
A neighbor who was feeding Roger’s pets reported the safe missing at 4:30 p.m., Yeaton said. The theft had to have taken place some time after 1:30 p.m., when the neighbor had fed the animals, he said.
Investigators didn’t find any signs of forced entry and have information that suggests the theft was committed by someone who knew what Rogers kept in the safe, Yeaton said, adding that the neighbor is not a suspect.
Yeaton didn’t know what kind of pills were taken or details about whether the house was left unlocked. He said it likely took two people to remove the safe and load it into a vehicle, which may have been a pickup truck, sport utility vehicle or other larger vehicle.
“I question whether (the safe) would have fit in a car,” he said.
Rogers told deputies that the cash and value of the stolen items totaled about $24,000.
Yeaton asked that anyone with information about the theft to call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at 778-2680 or toll free 800-773-2680.
