FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue High School had two attempts late in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but it was Leavitt that made the big plays on its way to a 22-17 win over the Cougars in a Pine Tree Conference Class B football game Friday night at Kemp Field.

The Hornets (6-0) took the lead on a 7-yard TD run by Jake Ouellette and a two-point conversion pass from Jordan Hersom to Brian Bedard with 6 minutes, 31 seconds left in the game. After each team punted, Mt. Blue took over with 3:14 left at its own 26-yard line. On the fourth play of the drive, Mt. Blue quarterback Jordan Whitney was intercepted by Hersom, and Leavitt took over at its own 26.

Mt. Blue (5-1) again forced Leavitt to punt and took over on its own 49-yard line. Whitney completed passes of 11 and 15 yards on the ensuing drive, but the drive stalled at the Leavitt 32 and time ran out.

“They rang the bell on us, and we came back and answered,” Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway said. “We scrambled, we fought hard, we stayed with our game plan.”

Trailing 14-7 to start the second half, Mt. Blue scored 10 points to take the lead in the third quarter. After forcing Leavitt to punt, Mt. Blue took over at the Leavitt 44-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Eric Berry ran 44 yards for a score and Shawn Keach kicked the extra point to tie the game at 14-14 with 10:07 left in the second quarter.

Leavitt fumbled on its ensuing possession and Mt. Blue recovered at its own 36-yard line. The drive, which included a 17-yard pass from Whitney to Cam Sennick on third down, took Mt. Blue to the Leavitt 13. The drive stalled there, but Keach kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Mt. Blue its first lead of the game, 17-14, with 5:18 left in the third.

“We responded in the second half,” Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin said.

Leavitt jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 14-yard run by Ian Durgin. Mt. Blue answered in the second quarter with a 28-yard TD pass from Whitney to Izaiah Tracy, but Leavitt answered with a 31-yard TD pass from Hersom to Ouellette.

“What a phenomenal game he had,” Hathaway said of Hersom. “He is a great, clutch performer, and he came through for us on a number of third down situations.”

Hersom competed 9 of 13 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Whitney finished 12 of 21 passing for 246 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Cougars finished with 340 yards of total offense to 301 from Leavitt. Mt. Blue, however, finished with three turnovers (two fumbles and an interception).

“The team that has the most turnovers is not going to win this game,” Parlin said.
