A little time off didn’t hurt Skowhegan at all.

The Indians, who have won the Class A state title nine of the last 10 years, began the playoffs Wednesday with their first game in seven days. Skowhegan still rolled to a 6-0 victory over Brunswick in an Eastern A field hockey quarterfinal.

“It definitely gave us enough time to mentally and physically prepare for the game and let our bodies rest and heal,” said Skowhegan forward Jessie Skillings, who scored three goals and set up another. “So I think having that time off was good for us.”

Nicole Sevey, Makaela Michonski and Sarah Finnemore each added a goal for the top-ranked Indians (15-0-0), who will host No. 5 Cony in a semifinal on Saturday. Brunswick, the No. 8 seed, finishes up at 4-10-1.

Skowhegan led 4-0 at halftime, but coach Paula Doughty said the Indians played better as the game went on. Skillings agreed, saying the communication kept improving.

“At first we weren’t talking,” Skillings said, “but at the end of the game, our talk was just unstoppable.”

Skowhegan used 17 players and Doughty praised several substitutes for their play, including sophomore Mikayla Toth at right midfielder and freshman Rylie Blanchet at right wing.

“Mikayla Toth had a great game,” Doughty said. “I was super-pumped. She just played really, really well. (Rylie) had (a) good stick down the side. She had good cross passes. She did great. She really had a good showing today.”
