PALERMO — Selectmen agreed Thursday to follow up on resident Richard Reitchel’s request to see if Palermo can get cable service.
Reitchel asked board members two weeks ago if they would sign a letter to Time Warner Cable asking the company to consider extending service into Palermo, if he drafted it.
He brought a draft Thursday evening.
Selectmen offered suggestions and agreed that Reitchel should email them a revised draft that they would sign.
Code Enforcement Officer Darryl McKenney said Thursday that Palermo’s Cable Television Ordinance requires a company to offer service to all residents, not just those in densely populated areas. The ordinance says that any cable television company serving Palermo “must agree to furnish cable television to all who have electric or telephone line within three years, if the people want it.”
Selectmen told Reitchel if Time Warner or another company is interested, but not with that stipulation, he can ask voters to amend the ordinance at Town Meeting in March.
Town voters adopted the ordinance in 1993. McKenney suggested other provisions might need updating by now.
In other business Thursday, Town Clerk Sheila McCarty reminded those present that absentee ballots for the Nov. 8 election are now available. Palermo’s polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Town Office.
McCarty also has 2012 dog licenses on hand. By state law, all dogs older than six months must be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year.
