CONCORD TOWNSHIP — A Bingham man was killed Sunday night after his 2003 Ford Taurus went off the road and struck a utility pole on Route 16, also known as Kennebec River Road.

The man, Jarod Copeland, 36, was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where he was pronounced dead, according to Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The single-vehicle accident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Copeland was alone in the car traveling south when the vehicle left the road, snapped the utility pole on the driver’s side and came to rest in a field.

Cpl. Ritchie Putnam responded to the scene, along with the Bingham fire and rescue units.

A passer-by reported the accident. The cause is under investigation, Gottardi said. The accident is being reconstructed by Cpl. Michael Ross of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The car was destroyed. An autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office was scheduled to have taken place Monday.
