OAKLAND — An afternoon of brass and big band holiday music is set for Sunday at Messalonskee Performing Arts Center at Messalonskee High School.
The Messalonskee holiday concert starts at 2 p.m., and ticket sales and donations will benefit Messalonskee Chamber Chorus’ trip to sing at Carnegie Hall next spring. The concert has several different groups performing.
The Down East Brass quintet, which includes Andrew Forster, band director at Messalonskee, will perform, as will the Stan Kenton Tribute Band.
“These holiday gems by Kenton are not that widely known so the audience will be in for a real treat,” Forster said, adding that the professional musicians from across the state are donating their time to make this concert possible.
The Stand Kenton Tribute Band is a big brass band, with five trumpet, five trombone and four French horn players, along with percussionists. The late Stan Kenton was a famous jazz pianist and band leader. Characteristic of Kenton’s style, there are no saxophones, said Dwight Tibbetts, music teacher at Augusta schools and also a member of Down East Brass.
Several Messalonskee students ensembles also will perform.
Admission is $10 per person, with high school students admitted for free.
